Echoes in the Hills

Echoes in the Hills

The neighborhoods surrounding Eaton Canyon Park were among the hardest hit during the devastating Eaton Canyon Fire of January 2025. Over the course of two relentless weeks, the fire ravaged the landscape, fueled by dry conditions and high winds, ultimately claiming the lives of seventeen individuals. Among the victims were elderly residents, young families, and first responders, whose loss has deeply impacted the community. More than one thousand structures were reduced to ash, including homes, day care centers, churches, and other vital community buildings that had long served as places of gathering and support. The destruction not only altered the physical environment of Eaton Canyon Park, but also fractured the social and emotional fabric of the surrounding neighborhoods, leaving behind a powerful reminder of nature’s force and the vulnerability of the built environment.

The intent of this project was to respond to loss without spectacle, and to create a space that acknowledges both grief and resilience. Rather than proposing a singular monument, the design focuses on creating moments of pause, reflection, and reconnection within the canyon landscape. The project engages the scarred terrain as a living record of the fire, allowing architecture and landscape to work together in supporting remembrance, healing, and future gathering. Through restraint, material sensitivity, and attention to place, the project seeks to honor what was lost while offering the community a quiet framework for recovery and renewal.
